Swept Away By Chanel’s New Scents, Launching Today …

This elegant trio of eau de toilettes launches today: each of the Les Eaux de Chanel is inspired by the idea of travelling, and specifically by destinations that were special to the designer. And when we say travel, it goes without saying that these conjure up the gilded glamour of the Orient Express, or a private cabin of a liner in a black and white film rather than the current reality of shuffling along in a Ryanair queue, or avoiding the coughing of your fellow passengers. These rounded bottles, inspired by travel flasks of the 1920s, capture a most nostalgic air of Biarritz, Deauville and Venice, of glamorous times gone by.

As for the scents themselves, they are fleetingly beautiful (and certainly unisex – the whole idea of separate scents for men or for women has definitely fallen away). I find Biarritz and Deauville both quite summery, daytime scents as they feel so fresh and bright, with Calabrian citrus in each. “I wanted to create a sensation on the skin as if each ingredient were soaked with water,” explains perfumer Olivier Polge. Deauville is bright with orange rind and basil leaf, with hints of patchouli, green and woody.

Biarritz is a burst of grapefruit and mandarin plus lily of the valley and vetiver. Both fresh and clean. Venice, meanwhile, which would be my first choice (I’d love to wear it as a longer-lasting eau de parfum) is richer and more intense, still with citrus but with warmer cedar and amber notes and vanilla, making it a light oriental. Entirely divine on a man, by the way. These are all about the pleasure of that first spray, a mist that’s instantly uplifting and atmospheric. You just want to keep on spraying. If only all our journeys smelled like this …

From September 14, there will also be toiletries available in each scent – a shower gel (€44) and silky body lotion (€50) for each – which make beautiful gifts and will help to make the scent last longer on your skin.

Les Eaux de Chanel eau de toilettes are €105 each, at Brown Thomas and Arnotts.
