“The relationship between a wedding planner and a couple is very much like dating,” believes Tara Fay, founder of Xena Productions, “you do have to have a few first dates with planners before you find the right one for you.” She recommends brides-to-be perform their own due diligence – not all planners are the same or work in the same way, so it’s a good idea to meet several before narrowing the field.
Fay’s other advice is as follows: “Always ask for referrals (if you have not been referred to them) and if someone is much cheaper than another, there is always a reason for this.” Often Fay believes a simple phone call will give you an instinctive feeling about a planner. “Usually I would recommend people having a phone or Skype/video call with a planner ahead of the first meeting as you will know from this if you can work together or not. The initial questions you will ask on the call will lead to more queries you will have in person. If you don’t click on the phone call, you can question the need for a face-to-face meeting.”
In the first meeting, important questions to ask are as follows:
Will you be present on the wedding day and if so for how long – if you are not there who will be there?
Will you take on another wedding on the same day as mine or what distance do you leave between weddings?
How are your fees structured, do you take commissions from vendors, can I use my own vendors?
How are you paid, what contract will you give me and what is included in that?
Can you ensure all vendors sign NDAs, if required, and not to share images on social media without my approval?
How many meetings will we have leading up to my wedding?
