Having tested them against the competition, here’s the lowdown on what these four mascaras do well, from €16 up to €30 …
Our current mascara favourites change regularly, depending on what we’re testing out. But at the moment, it comes down to these four. We all have different lashes – some straight, some short, some sparse – so it depends what you need, and how much you want to spend, but here’s the lowdown on what these four do well, from €16 up to €30, having tested them against the competition:
FOR DRESS DOWN DAYS
Glossier‘s Lash Slick mascara is just smart. It combs through lashes quickly and without clumping, and lasts well, and at €16 it’s a great mid-range mascara, so half the price of other designer brands. At www.glossier.com.
FOR DRESS UP DAYS (THAT RUN INTO EVENINGS)
If you want a bit more oomph around the lashes – you’re tired maybe and need a bit more around the eyes – go for Code8‘s new kid on the block, Lash Sophisticate High Definition Mascara, £25stg. It reminds me of the sell-out Victoria Beckham x Estee Lauder Lash Ink mascara – it really coats lashes easily and silkily, and stays on all day without drying out (good job, as it’s heavy, so you don’t want to carry it around with you). For lengthened, defined lashes, this is well worth trying. At www.codeeight.com.
FOR ALL-OUT GLAMOUR
I didn’t like Hourglass Caution Extreme Lash mascara (€30) at first; I found it too clogged when you first pull out the brush, meaning you have to scrape off all the excess. However, once you get going, you’ll find this has a mighty impact on your lashes and adds immediate glamour. It’s really decadent and lush, for nearly but not quite fake lashes. You might find it a bit extra, but this is a real dressing-table beauty item. At Arnotts and Harvey Nichols.
FOR KICK AND CURL
Nars Climax Mascara (€25) is great for combing through lashes for a quick boost – the equivalent of a once-over with a hot brush through your hair. There’s no clumping or extra product to mess around with, so it’s quick to use, and light to carry around (though you don’t need to – one coat is enough). At counters nationwide.
