I’m a California girl through and through. I was born and raised in Central California before moving to Los Angeles where I opened my clinic and built my business. Today, I split my time between homes in Santa Barbara and Palm Springs with frequent trips to Los Angeles.
My mother was born and raised in Carpinteria, which is a small beach town near Santa Barbara. I’ve lived there off and on since I was twelve. When my son turned twelve, I felt called to come back to Santa Barbara. I knew it offered a better lifestyle for my family than living fulltime in Los Angeles. We were looking for more freedom and space. I’m both a beach and a ranch girl, and in Santa Barbara you get both, and you’re an hour and a half from LA. Everything is so clean and well-cared for, and I appreciate the architecture. Living here inspires me to spend time outdoors, and to be more active.
When my son was younger, weekends were definitely more about going on play dates with other parents and their kids. I was also juggling work events and building my business, so my weekends were invariably hectic. At this stage of my life, I get to slow down a bit. As a wife and mother, I cherish the time I spend with my husband and son.
Weekends are now about disconnecting and recharging. The weekend is spent in Palm Springs, where it’s usually 85?F or 90?F: very hot. I’m a total water baby, so my favourite ways to relax all involve water. I start my Saturday by drinking a big glass of water, then jumping into our pool. I’ll swim laps before I float in the pool, looking up at the sky – a form of meditation for me. Alternatively I might walk on the beach or relax in our hot tub. Afterwards, I make time for a luxurious skincare treatment, usually a mask or a peel. [Somerville suffered from psoriasis, eczema and hives, which inspired her to take a degree in esthetics before launching her award-winning medi-skin clinic]. I am a supporter of the Plastic Oceans campaign and have made a pledge to remove plastic and have 100 per cent recyclable packaging by 2022.
Although I don’t work in the clinic on a daily basis any longer, I am still involved in the business side. I have an incredible team of estheticians, nurse practitioners and staff who make every single visit to the clinic feel like a concierge experience for mind, body and soul. [Somerville’s celebrity clients include Barbra Streisand, Annette Bening, Kirsten Dunst, Jessica Alba and formerly Meghan Markle]. Even after selling my company [to Unilever in 2015] and changing how much time I spend working on the business versus in the business, my clinic remains the heartbeat of my brand.
When I’m in LA, Croft Alley is a must for lunch. It’s located below my clinic and the vibe and food are amazing. At the weekend, I live in the typical Californian uniform of Lululemon leggings, Madewell T-shirts, and Havaianas flip-flops. If I’m going out, I dress it up with a leather jacket and hoop earrings. That’s actually one of the things I noticed when visiting Dublin recently [Somerville stayed at The Westbury] – Irish women dress so well, they are also very welcoming and take skincare very seriously.
On Saturdays I usually potter in the garden with my cats and dogs or work on a project like painting and distressing a piece of furniture for our house. For lunch, The Lark in Santa Barbara is a favourite for its artisanal cuisine and hip atmosphere. I love cooking so often I’ll make a big stew for Saturday lunch. Stews and soups and sauces are a huge part of my repertoire. In the afternoon, we’ll spend more time outdoors enjoying nature.
I’m not a party girl. For me, small, intimate gatherings are much more enjoyable and nourishing than a big party. Saturday nights, therefore, are usually at home, entertaining family and a close circle of friends I’ve known for years. I make what I call a “good for you” margarita with Hornitos Reposado tequila, fresh grapefruit juice, lime juice, and pomegranate juice. That’s my indulgence!
We just got electric mountain bikes, which are great fun. My husband, son and I will all get out on the trail and spend Sunday morning riding through the mountains. Afterwards we’ll have an indulgent lunch of sushi, or go to Delgado’s in Carpinteria for some Mexican food. In the afternoons I’ll often run out for a manicure and pedicure. Sometimes it feels like I don’t have time for it, but I always leave feeling refreshed and pretty.
Sad though it may sound, I’m usually in bed by 8:30pm, in pyjamas, getting cosy with my cat. I’m a Netflix fan so I’ll watch a show. Last thing at night I drink two glasses of water so I wake up feeling refreshed in the morning
