SEBASTIAN HERKNER’s designs combine traditional craftsmanship with colour …
Setting the scene for the design year is the bi-annual Maison & Objet décor fair which started yesterday and runs until January 22. The fair has named German product and furniture designer Sebastian Herkner as its Designer of the Year. Though you may not have heard of the 37-year-old from Offenbach am Main, his output has been prolific having collaborated with Rosenthal, Moroso, Classicon, Thonet and Dedon among others.
Combining new technology with traditional craftsmanship Herkner has already received over 30 awards for his prowess. Having interned with Stella McCartney, Herkner credits her with his love of colour and authenticity. Detail-oriented, Herkner uses traditional materials such as ceramics, wood, marble and leather. His iconic “Bell” table for Classicon is particularly striking – a steel and brass platter nestled on a hand-blown glass base.
