Keep Your Cool: 5 Ways to Stay Cool This Summer

As the weather heats up, with good forecasts ahead at last, we’re looking for ways to cool down. Whether it’s a refreshing face spray, or a light gel moisturiser rather than a richer cream one, we have five ways of taking the heat out of the situation…

1 A good face mist is a quick and easy way to chill down, as well as restore some moisture to dry skin. There’s no need to pay a fortune for one – something like Vichy Thermal Spa Water Spray will do the job for under a tenner. Keep one in your bag, on your desk, in the car and keep your cool. NB It’s not just about the weather, but also hormones: it’s a good idea to keep a mini spray bottle on you if you have menopause-related heatwaves happening, for instant relief.

2 AVEENO Skin Relief Lotion with Menthol (€6.12) has minty menthol to help soothe skin that’s dry, sensitive or irritable, and it has an instant cooling effect (so it’s good for hot flushes as well as humid days). The AVEENO Daily Moisturising Yogurt Body Cream (€10.59) is also cooling to use, with the benefit of long-lasting moisturisation, with the help of yogurt concentrate and Colloidal Oatmeal, known for its skin-soothing properties. Try it in two different scent combinations: Apricot & Honey or Vanilla & Oats.

3 Not everyone wants to jump into the sea (though it’s one of the most refreshing and energising things you can do to cool down). You could try stand-up paddleboarding instead, and get out on the sea without (hopefully) getting wet – see www.isup.ie for boards; www.summersup.ie for bookings in West Cork, or www.bigstyle.ie in Dun Laoghaire harbour. Alternatively, for the closest you’ll get to sea spray in a bottle, try Irish brand Fragrances of Ireland. Their bestselling scent, Inis, is available as a cologne, soap and more – but try the new Home & Linen Mist to bring the ocean scent indoors, €21.95 at www.fragrancesofireland.com.

4 A hair mist can be a good way to wear scent on hotter days, when you’d rather have something light and lively. Chanel No5 Hair mist (€55, at counters nationwide) is a lovely way to wear this classic scent (100 years old this year), while Frederic Malle hair mists – such as Portrait of a Lady and Carnal Flower (€135) – are a highly desirable, more affordable way to access these luxury scents. Jo Malone London now have hair mists in some of their most popular scents, while Rituals’ hair and body mists are good value at €17.50. Finally, we’ve just spotted Byredo hair perfumes (€57), including bestseller Gypsy Water (at Brown Thomas), which is top of our wishlist.

5 There are more options for deodorants now – you don’t have to reach for an environmentally-unfriendly aerosol. Modern Botany’s gender-free natural deodorant is our favourite – it doubles as a light, cooling body spray and you can refill it endlessly from the new giant 500ml glass bottle. It’s made with entirely natural ingredients, from essential oils to witchhazel. www.modernbotany.com. Caudalie have a new “free-from” stick deodorant with eucalyptus, and it is vegan and very cooling to apply (€13). At pharmacies and www.monicatolan.com.
