Apart from batting aside wasps and battling changeable weather, dining outside is one of the seasonal joys of summer.
Here are some furniture ideas to suit every style and budget.
For modernists, Kettal’s new Vimini collection by Patricia Urquiola was inspired by the iconic 1950’s Basket chair designed by Danish designers Nanna and Jørgen Ditzel. “We called it Vimini because it means wicker in Italian and sounds like Bimini, an island I like,” is Urquiola’s simple explanation of the collection’s name. Fresh yet timeless, Vimini’s laid-back appeal is as comfortable as it is stylish.
Danish brand Jysk offers a Scandi look with its Vedby outdoor dining series (from €64.99), which combines sleek white and teak, while the black Beder series (from €129) offers classic styles. The brand’s first Irish store is in Naas, Co Kildare, where the complete Outdoor Living collection includes bamboo furniture. Look out for stores opening in Co Meath and in Portlaoise, Co Laois, over the summer.
Søstrene Grene’s outdoor living collection combines colour and “hygge” to enhance relaxation. From colourful plant pots and hammocks to cushions and quilted blankets to prettify old furniture, the store would be my first port of call when organising an outdoor party.
For updating furniture on a budget, Aldi’s wooden garden range is hard to beat. Weather and stain-resistant, it is made from FSC-certified wood, with all items foldable making for easy storage. I particularly like this Wooden Lounger (€79.99) – a take on the classic Steamer chair.
The addition of a Bistro set can transform even the smallest terrace area. This white Maya Tray Bistro set from Oxendales will look good inside as it does outside.
Finally, why not plant some some jasmine in the vicinity of your terrace, as it creates a lovely fragrancy especially if you are dining at dusk.
