Five New Takeaways to Try Over The Bank Holiday Weekend


The air is filled with expectancy as we wait with bated breath to hear when we might once again socialise and visit restaurants, and we can’t wait. While there have no doubt been many Covid casualties in the hospitality industry, there are also many new places springing up, making us all the more excited about a summer of adventuring and trying new things. Here are five we think you should know about.

All Hail The Box, Dawson St

Jerk chicken fans rejoice, your time has come. Located on Dawson Street in the previous Pablo Picante location (quite possibly the smallest unit in Dublin?), All Hail is a pop up Jerk shack with just one dish on the menu so chances are they have perfected it. Two pieces of Jerk chicken are nestled amid coconut Caribbean rice and peas, charred corn, slaw and mango hot sauce, all washed down with an Old Jamaican ginger beer. Form an orderly queue.

Mac Daddy, Temple Bar

Once considered the ubiquitous American comfort food, in more recent years, mac n cheese has made quite a few memorable appearances on Irish menus, most notably the truffle mac n cheese in Featherblade and the crab mac n cheese from Super Miss Sue (RIP). Mac Daddy in Dublin’s Temple Bar has raised the bar considerably and will be our new go to place for casual comfort food in the city. Dishes include chilli mac n cheese, chicken wing mac n cheese and a selection of chicken sandwiches on brioche bread. There is also deep fried Oreos for dessert, with a white chocolate dip. Best to wear the beloved lockdown loungewear while eating this one.

Rósta Roast at Pepperina Garden Bistro

Sadly, the weather for the upcoming bank holiday weekend makes it unlikely that we will be enjoying much in the way of al fresco meals but a traditional roast dinner is a celebratory food event of another kind, especially when it’s somewhat dreary outside. Rósta, from Pepperina in Ranelagh is just the place to go to indulge your roast dinner craving. A roast for four starts at €49 and includes three generous sides along with a choice of chicken, loin of pork or beef with various options to add on. Flying solo? Then a roast dinner for one is €19 and perfect to be enjoyed with a classic Sunday movie and a glass of red wine.

DFT at Rib Eye Malahide

Another pop up for the foreseeable future, Dirty Trendy Food is located at Rib Eye in Malahide and is from the Oliver Dunne stable of restaurants. Unsurprisingly, everything on the menu is ‘dirty’, including the fries, burgers and shakes (bourbon whiskey and salted caramel anyone?). When last we looked at the menu, lobster nuggets were the special of the week served with mango and cardamom chutney and chilli sour cream.

Dosa Dosa, Grand Canal Dock

Dosa Dosa’s popularity in their new Grand Canal street home does not appear to be waning, so if you are planning a visit, be prepared to queue. Unsurprisingly, dosa is the order of the day, a savoury crêpe style pancake from India and the choices are endless. Also on the menu, kathi rolls, parotta (Indian flatbreads) and uttapam which we are reliably informed is slightly thicker than the dosa. Whatever you choose, if the queues are anything to go by, it is unlikely you will be disappointed.
