Beauty Buzz with Leonard Daly: The Best Red-carpet Beauty Looks

In our new online series, guest beauty expert LEONARD DALY decodes the beauty looks that stood out at the Oscars, and explains how to recreate them at home …

With awards season coming to an end, I’m taking a look back at the beauty seen on the red carpet at the Oscars. We now receive the actual lists of products used on Hollywood’s A listers, so we can get inspired by their looks, and then get hold of the real thing to try it for ourselves. This year’s beauty looks were naturally enhancing and simple, in order to complement the more flamboyant and brightly coloured dresses.

Standouts included Julia Roberts’ timeless look: make-up artist Genevieve Herr created a “natural silver look to match the silver tones of her jewellery, her classic waved hair and to complement her bright pink dress.” She used a beautiful mix of shimmer shadows and a liquid liner; though we’re sometimes told to only use matte shadows after a certain age, this proves my opinion that if you like the look of a product you should wear it!

Genevieve used the Teint Idole Ultra 24H longwear foundation with Le Monochromatique blusher in Petit Bisou added to cheeks to add warmth to the complexion. The eyes were defined using Ombre Hypnôse Stylo then Lancôme’s Colour Design in shade 610 Lustrous Opal, a deeper silver shade, was added to the crease line to define the shape of the eye. Grandiôse liner helps define the lash line, and it’s winged out for added drama, with Hypnôse Drama mascara on lashes. The lips were lined with Le Lip in Sheer Raspberry and new spring lipstick, L’Absolu Mademoiselle Shine in shade 232 Mademoiselle Plays (launching April 24, €30) gives a super-natural finish.

Lupita Nyong’o always shines brightly on the red carpet – her make-up is always magnificent. “For the Academy Awards, Lupita’s white feathery dress called for a feminine and flirty look,” her make-up artist Nick Barose says. “I played up the look with pearlised eyes, flirty lashes and matte raspberry tone lips. The key was mixing metallic pearl-toned eyeshadows and placing lashes on the outer corners to make the look party-ready.”

This look is all about the matte lip and sparkly eyes – when everything else is pearly, the matte lip really stands out. To create the sparkly eyes use a damp brush with Starlight Sparkle Eyeshadow Palette and Colour Design Starlight Sparkle Eyeshadow Palette from Lancôme. Apply various shades of silvery pewter, using the lighter silver tone on the lids and the darker tones on outer corners, to then blend up to the brow bones. For extra drama, wet a liner brush and dab the lighter silver shade in inner corners to add more dimension. On the lips? L’Absolu Rouge Drama Matte in shade 417 Berry Intense, lined around the edges with Le Lip liner in Sheer Chocolate to add definition.
