Basket Cases: 10 Straw Accessories To Buy This Summer

We’re all WEAVING and BOBBING this summer as BASKETS become the ACCESSORY DU JOUR again …

This summer, stand still long enough and you will be woven over, laced into a raffia corset and monogrammed or bedecked with a jaunty pom-pom. Baskets are everywhere! But they have a great deal going for them – a sturdy straw basket accommodates towel, togs and tablet for the beach or a bag of cherries and a bottle of rosé from the market, even doubles as office handbag for the summer months (note: paper clips will disappear!) Natural baskets go with every colour under the sun and have a relaxed and casual air no leather tote can ever pretend to. Sandals and espadrilles with dinky raffia details have a similarly relaxing effect on your summer wardrobe. Pumps with your capris = on duty; espadrilles: definitely off. Baskets are big indoors too, as once again (back to the 1990s we go!) we stow our laundry in capacious Ali Baba baskets and lounge in generously proportioned basket chairs. With all this basketry weaving its spell, a word of caution: don’t mix your metaphors and wear more than one or two items of straw origin at the same time. Straw that broke the camel’s back and all that …
