‘The Retrospective Exhibition’ is a unique lingerie showcase of eight vintage pieces from iconic brand LA PERLA‘s atelier in Bologna …
“Never compromise on quality or innovation,” was Italian corset-maker Ada Masotti’s motto. You may never have heard of Masotti but her coveted lingerie brand La Perla has retained its allure for almost six decades. Anyone who has ever received a La Perla gift will know the confidence the lingerie gives the wearer – perhaps as much to do with the price tag as the feel of luxurious fabrics next to the skin.
When Masotti founded the brand in Bologna, a city known for its silk factories, she was known as “golden scissors” such was her skill and artistry moulding luxurious fabrics in lace, silk and tulle into fashion-forward undergarments. She worked directly on the body as opposed to other corset makers of the same era, referenced today in the La Perla Second Skin ranges.
The “Made in Italy” credentials of La Perla were matched by the exclusivity of the pieces – some made from gold thread and Swarovski crystals and endorsed by celebrities and actresses. Campaign images have featured It-girls and models such as Cara Delevingne and Kendall Jenner, while on-screen references have added fuel to the La Perla mythology. Daniel Craig wore a pair of GrigioPerla trunks in Casino Royale which were later sold for £44,450 …
Jean-Paul Gaultier collaborated with the house in 2010 and referenced the famous cone-shaped bra he designed for Madonna. This collaboration and a stunning lace body designed especially for La Perla’s 50th anniversary forms part of a must-visit retrospective in The Lingerie Room, Brown Thomas, which documents the evolution and innovations of the brand. While you’re there, make sure you have a fitting with Rose Reilly.
Need to Know: From December 7-13, The Lingerie Room at Brown Thomas presents ‘The Retrospective Exhibition’ from La Perla at its Grafton Street store. www.brownthomas.com.
