A Bargain Italian Red To Cheer Up Pizza And Pasta

MARY DOWEY finds a juicy number from LIDL’s Italian wine sale …

Supermarket special offers aren’t necessarily all that special – but this Tuscan red from Lidl’s Italian wine sale which started on Monday [20 Feb] offers drinkability at such a decent price that it’s worth scooping up a bottle or two before they disappear.

Made mainly from Sangiovese, the grape responsible for many of Tuscany’s grandest wines, this juicy number has attractive notes of cherries, raspberries and herbs leading into a firm finish with the palate-cleansing tang of bitter cherry that so often characterises Italian reds. Morellino di Scansano, the area from which it comes, is part of the Maremma, a rather posh region on the Tuscan coast – a point that makes its modest price even more of a surprise.

Although it won’t disgrace your Saturday steak or Sunday roast, this is essentially what I’d regard as a Tuesday night wine – a tasty, inexpensive quaffer to partner simple food. It will be a best friend to Italian staples like pizza and pasta (especially with mushrooms, spicy sausage or perennially popular meat sauce).

But this is also the kind of bottle you can reach for confidently even if your menu strays not an inch into foreign territory, limiting its exhausted midweek reach to a bacon sandwich or cheese on toast. Just remember that, like most Italian reds, it tastes infinitely better with food of some kind than with none.

Alcohol: 13.5%

From Lidl’s Italian sale while stocks last, €9.99.
