7 Perfect Perfumes Guaranteed To Go Down Well

Our pick of the best perfume gifts this season …

If you’re buying perfume as a gift, aim to steer clear of the coffrets and go for beautiful one-off perfumes instead. To introduce someone to a gorgeous new scent, try a discovery set, such as the one by lovely Irish company Waters + Wild, or a selection of minis by Frederic Malle. Cloon Keen’s Dublin shop reopens on December 1 at Powerscourt Townhouse so head there for the finest Irish perfumes (and new winter candle Noble Myrrh; www.cloonkeen.com). Here’s our pick of seven great perfume presents, from €25 …

1 The Burren Perfumery Wild Rose eau de parfum, which launched this autumn, is my perfume of the year. It’s entirely natural, made from the most precious and beautiful rose sourced from the south of France, and it’s been created with absolute love and care in small batches in the west of Ireland. I can’t imagine anyone not loving it. €130, www.burrenperfumery.com.

2 You can’t go wrong with Frederic Malle – a rare collection in which every single scent smells beyond great. If you’re not sure what to choose, a selection box of a few makes the best choice. I love this 20th anniversary set of three, including seriously sexy Musc Ravageur and the outrageously beautiful Portrait of a Lady. Limited edition, €195; www.brownthomas.com.

3 If you love a great bottle, Lancôme’s jasmine-centred Idôle is super-slim and elegant – and it’s refillable. €78.30 50ml at www.Boots.ie.

4 L’Occitane’s Verbena Mandarin limited edition for winter is gorgeous, light and uplifting, with bright citrus top notes and smooth amber, woody notes and bitter orange beneath. €52; ie.loccitane.com. There’s a full range of body treats and soap too – keep the scent lasting on your skin with the Melting Body Cream (€29).

5 Escentric Molecule 05 is the newest scent in the popular range and it’s available from Irish boutiques including Samui in Cork and Seagreen in Dublin (from €45 for a mini bottle). There are also chic Escentric body washes at €25.

6 Tonya Kidd-Beggs’ Stories Parfums perfumes, hailing from Co Down, are gorgeous and not in the mainstream. My favourite is No.02, a rose, patchouli and tonka bean blend that’s really memorable and intriguing. This Stories No.02 duo is good value at €52 for a refillable mini eau de parfum plus a 100ml hand and body lotion. www.storiesparfums.com

7 Jo Malone London’s Orange Bitters is a beauty (from €56 for 30ml), but for a wider choice go for the Cologne Collection featuring five minis, Orange Bitters, Rose & Magnolia, White Moss & Snowdrop, Green Almond & Redcurrant and Ginger Biscuit Colognes. www.brownthomas.com
