This month we’re stepping back in time with three new cinema releases featuring strong FEMALE LEADS …
Keira Knightley will star in Colette, as the real-life 20th-century French writer Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette, whose husband (played by Dominic West) took credit for her work. But it’s the period costumes by costume designer Andrea Flesch which steal the show.
Saoirse Ronan will play Mary Queen of Scots in the upcoming film directed by Josie Rourke, telling the story of her at times tense relationship with her cousin, Queen Elizabeth I (Margot Robbie), and her eventual demise.
Another standout for January is The Favourite (co-produced by Irish company Element Productions), starring Olivia Colman, Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz, and directed by Yorgos Lanthimos. Set in Britain in 1708, it explores Queen Anne’s close relationship with two female members of her court. Just this week Olivia Colman won best actress at the Golden Globes for her performance in The Favourite and it was announced that the film has been nominated for no less than twelve awards at the BAFTAS.
All three films are tipped for wins at the Oscars next month, and provide worthy escapism for a quiet January afternoon.
