We’ve been scouring the shops for lovely MOTHER’S DAY GIFTS that make a change from flowers or chocolates. Here are three ideas to help …
GIFTS WITH PURPOSE
Choose a beauty gift that has a deeper level: all proceeds from sales of Elizabeth Arden‘s March On pink lipstick (limited edition) will be donated to UN Women. €26, at counters nationwide. Treat your mum to a L’Occitane Solidarity Balm, too – it smells absolutely beautiful (orange blossom), and 100 per cent of profits go to support projects that promote women’s leadership in Burkina Faso, where the shea butter for this product is sourced from. That’s surely a great way to spend €6.
Timeless and enduring: McNutt of Donegal have some beautiful scarves and pashminas as well as alpaca throws. The pashminas in merino lambswool are a generous size and lovely quality, in pretty subtle shades such as smokey blue-grey or face-warming pink; €64.95.
YOU CAN’T GO WRONG WITH A GREAT SCENT
There are great perfume options, however much you have to spend. Affordable: go for a Rituals eau de perfume, from under a tenner (at Arnotts). Mid-range, how about Tom Ford’s Velvet Orchid travel spray (€39) – it will be beautifully packaged, and gives a touch of luxury that’s practical, too. Or Molton Brown‘s Suede Orris eau de toilette (€49), with powdery Tuscan orris, or iris root, which is classy, velvety and created by a rising star perfumer, Jérôme Di Marino; it’s a bit of an insider’s secret (I like the hair mist too, €60). If you’re splashing out, Elixir pour femme by Roja Dove is ultra-feminine yet not girly – it’s not as pink as it looks – even though it’s crammed full of flowers such as lily of the valley, geranium, rose and jasmine. It’s fresh, with bright bergamot, and lasting, with lots of spices; £225stg from www.rojadove.com.
