Sophie’s restaurant and Trina Smith, one of Jacob’s Creek winemakers, are jointly hosting a dinner on Tuesday October 3 at 7pm. Guests will be treated to a three-course meal prepared by Sophie’s head chef Richard Carmody, matched with the newly-released Jacob’s Creek Double Barrel Cabernet Sauvignon, which has been aged in Irish whiskey barrels. The partnership between Middleton Distillery in Cork and Jacob’s Creek winery has produced a deeper, smoother wine, which attendees will taste before and after it has been aged in Irish whiskey casks. Trina Smith, will explain the double barrel technique, and how this adds to the flavour profile of the wine. Tickets are €45, available to purchase via Event Brite with limited spaces available.
The annual Wines from Spain fair takes place at the Marker Hotel on Monday October 9 from 12.30pm – 6pm, and will feature 29 Irish importers showcasing their portfolios of white, red, sparkling and Jerez wines. Other highlights include a gastronomy table with traditional jamon and cheeses, as well as special tasting of wines from Navarra. Registration is required as places are limited. Jane Boyce, Master of Wine, is hosting an exclusive wine dinner on Wednesday October 11 in The Saddle Room at The Shelbourne Hotel. She will showcase wines with a unique Irish connection from around the world, as selected by sommelier Nisea Doddy and the team from James Nicholson Wine Merchant. The evening features a five-course menu created by executive head chef Garry Hughes, and is sure to be an indulgent experience. Make sure you book ahead for a Taste & Learn food and wine pairing event at Le Plancha, Monkstown on Tuesday October 24. Le Plancha will be welcoming Herman Seifried from Seifried Wine Estate, New Zealand. Seifried will be giving an insight into the family business in Moutere Vallery, near Nelson, and their passion for beautifully crafted wines. It’s the home of Sweet Agnes Riesling – New Zealand’s highly-regarded dessert wine. With a menu prepared by chef patron Andrew Lawlor, who has appeared on TV3, tickets are €50 per person. Simon Keegan, the sommelier at Suesey Street, has introduced a weekly celebration of wine choices at exceptional prices. So-called Wine Wednesdays run each week from 6pm – 9pm and feature creative menus paired with wines at less than half the price from different regions and grapes. SPIT Wine Tasting Festival takes place on Thursday October 5 from 6pm – 8.30pm at the Smock Alley Theatre in Dublin 2. Tickets for the tasting cost €30 and can be booked online through www.spit.ie. Irish Times wine writer John Wilson will be at the event, where guests will have the opportunity to taste over 120 wines.
At Terroirs in Donnybrook a number of wine tastings will take place over the coming months. Richard Mayson will be in store on Friday October 7 (4pm and 7pm) and Saturday October 7 (10.30am and 2pm). Hailing from Derbyshire, Mayson is a consultant on wine and writes for Decanter and The World of Fine Wine magazines, as well as writing five books on wine. The established wine writer will introduce his range of wines from Alentejo.
On Saturday November 4 Delphine & Julien Zermott will visit Terroirs from 11am – 7pm. The pair have developed a unique style of wines on their vineyard which is situated between Millau and Montpellier, on the foothills of the Plateau du Larzac. These wines will be available to taste on the day.
