The beautiful surroundings of The Merrion Hotel was the setting for The Gloss Magazine’s fifth Wedding Salon on Saturday March 10. Our glossy guests came in search of inspiration for their wedding days, from the all-important organisational elements to the exciting discussion of choosing your wedding look.
Harpist and singer Sinéad Walshe provided a beautiful welcome on the staircase as our guests arrived to the Dangan Room for a breakfast of coffee, tea and pastries.
Covering every possible organisational concern, the event was hosted by Aoibhinn Ní Shúilleabháin and organised by wedding planning expert Tara Fay of Xena Productions who was on hand to share her invaluable knowledge with our guests.
The day’s programme began with hair and make-up demonstrations by Brown Sugar followed by a Q&A with make-up director Dearbhla Keenan and top stylist Christian Shannon who answered all our brides questions. Dearbhla and Christian showed three bridal looks; Hollywood glamour, which featured a soft wave, nude eye and a strong red lip; a classic soft look for young brides with a loose half-up-half-down-style, glowing skin and a rose lip; and a textured up-style paired with a soft smokey eye and nude lip.
Next up bridal designer Sharon Hoey joined Aoibhínn on stage with The Gloss jewellery editor, gemologist and jeweller Natasha Sherling. Sharon introduced brides to the bridal experience at the Sharon Hoey boutique, where she stocks a range of international bridal collections including Jenny Packham. Sharon advised our brides on how to choose the right shade for your dress, and how important it is to choose something that suits your personal style.
Natasha accessorised Sharon’s dresses with her own jewellery designs, noting how the current focus is often on earrings. Necklaces are taking a backseat in order to show off beautiful necklines. One key tip Natasha shared is to swap your engagement ring to your right hand before the ceremony, or to ask a trusted bridesmaid to mind it as traditionally the wedding ring is always worn first, underneath any other rings.
Aoibhínn was then joined by two master fitters at Marks & Spencer, Emma and Maureen, who presented our guests with a lingerie and shapewear masterclass. They showed some of the most popular shapewear and bras for bridalwear including the Superhold Strapless, the Scanlace Bra and the Smoothlines Curve Bra.
Helen Cody showed some of her elegant designs and talked to our guests about creating a bespoke and unique wedding dress. Helen creates one-off and limited edition pieces using fine Italian and French fabrics often with a very romantic feel. Her final dress shown on the day even received a round of applause from our guests who were so impressed by the detail on the beautiful blush multi disc strapless dress.
During lunch in the Wellesley Room, Ed Cooney Executive Chef of The Merrion gave our guests insights into choosing menus for their wedding and Pastry Chef Paul Kelly discussed desserts and wedding cakes. Tara Fay talked all things flowers from bouquets to table arrangements, showcasing some of Appassionata Flowers most beautiful blooms, followed by a Q&A session where brides-to-be took home great tips on all aspects of wedding planning.
Guests went home with a gorgeous goody bag from THE GLOSS, with gifts from Marks & Spencer, Laura Mercier, An Post, Appleberry Press and The Merrion. After guests took part in our social media competition all day by sharing their favourite moments of the event, one lucky winner was chosen to receive a special prize from The Merrion. The winner will enjoy dinner for two at the newly opened Garden Room at The Merrion.
