The Evolution of Saoirse Ronan

We dipped into the GLOSSY ARCHIVE to find our first ever shoot with GOLDEN GLOBE-winning actress, SAOIRSE RONAN

The year was 2009. A fresh-faced Saoirse Ronan was photographed by Renato Ghiazza exclusively for THE GLOSS in Dublin during the promotional tour for The Lovely Bones. In the accompanying interview, the 15-year-old ingénue said she was jazzed about the upcoming awards season: “I love doing my own hair and experimenting with make-up.”

Nine years later, Ronan is now a red carpet stalwart, having been nominated for every award from an Oscar to an IFTA. Last night she took home her first Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy for her role in Greta Gerwig’s critically acclaimed coming-of-age dramedy, Lady Bird. She wore a black Atelier Versace gown, Cartier jewels and Christian Louboutin heels, and thanked her mum from the stage.

In the film, set in 2002, Ronan plays Christine “Lady Bird” McPherson, a Catholic schoolgirl who is desperate to leave Sacramento, “the midwest of California,” but is reliant on a scholarship to an east coast college to do it. It’s My So-Called Life meets Mean Girls, with other notable performances from Laurie Metcalf, as her long-suffering mother, Timothée Chalamet as a love interest and Beanie Feldstein as the dorky best friend. It was the first film ever to receive 100% positive reviews on

Ronan and the uber-cool Gerwig have become friends. “I wrote a person I wasn’t sure existed,” Gerwig told Deadline Hollywood. “And then [Ronan] started bringing her to life. Lady Bird was really a collaboration between the two of us.”

Lady Bird is released on February 16.
