TEENAGE GIRLS are MAD ABOUT MAKE-UP and try every brand they can – but what really STANDS OUT for them, and what do they buy above all else? …
We asked three lovely 16-year-olds to tell us what’s worth spending pocket money on, and why… If you’re looking for gifts for teen girls, this is the hit list:
As a teenager I love to wear make-up, whether it’s for going out or experimenting with different looks. Over the past three years I have collected some “holy grail” items that I consider perfect for every day wear:
1 Simple Kind to Skin Hydrating Light Moisturiser
I use this as a base before applying the rest of my make-up to help my skin stay hydrated throughout the day, plus it’s a bargain at only €3.99.
2 L’Oreal True Match Foundation
If you’re looking for a medium coverage foundation at the right price and colour for your skin tone L’Oreal’s True Match Foundation is perfect and it’s easy to apply, €14.99.
3 NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer
This concealer is very popular among the beauty community and once you use it you can really tell why. I like to pop it under my eyes to brighten them up using my finger to pat it into the skin, €30.
4 Smashbox L.A Lights Blendable Lip and Cheek Colour
I love products that are multi-purpose. I use this to bring colour to my cheeks using my fingers before applying powder and to finish my look I also use it on my lips, €34.
5 Rimmel Stay Matte Powder
This powder is my personal favourite because it’s a pressed powder and keeps me matte throughout the day. I just use a bit of the powder on my T-zone as I prefer a more dewy look, €5.99.
6 Benefit Hoola Bronzer
I like to use this bronzer to bring colour to my face. I also use it as an eye shadow to add depth to the crease of my eye, €34.
7 theBalm Mary-Lou Manizer
Highlighter is my favourite part of doing my make-up. Adding highlighter gives my skin a glowing appearance and this one by theBalm works well with my pale complexion, €19.
8 Bobbi Brown Eye Shadow in ‘Grey’
Although this product is labelled as an eye shadow I use it to fill in my eyebrows with a thin angled brush, €21.45.
9 Benefit ‘They’re Real!’ Mascara
I use this mascara to help my lashes look longer, thicker and darker. With most Benefit product you can buy both mini or full size products. The mini version of this mascara is €12, full size €26.
10 Mario Badescu Rosewater
I adore this skincare product which you can pick up in Urban Outfitters for just €10. I use this rosewater spray to hydrate my skin before applying make-up and as a toner after cleansing my face at night.
As an adolescent girl who is forbidden to wear make-up in school, I think it’s safe to say my desire to achieve that perfect smokey eye and own every lipstick shade known to mankind becomes more profound every day. Even though I only have weekends to experiment with all the make-up I can, I have learnt a lot about how to create my perfect look to wear throughout my hectic teenage life! Here are the products I can’t live without:
1 Nars Sheer Glow Foundation, €43
2 Rimmel Wake Me Up Concealer, €7.49
3 Fenty Beauty Match Stix Matte Skinstick, €24
4 Two Faced Born This Way Setting Powder, €30
5 Maybelline Palette The Nudes, €14.99
6 Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil, €19.50
7 L’Oreal Mega Volume Miss Baby Roll Mascara, €10.49
8 Mac Pro Longwear Waterproof Brow Set, €18.50
9 Anastasia Beverly Hills Sun Dipped Glow Kit, €47.80
10 Mac Lipstick in Chili, €21
Make-up and I have been together since the age of 12, when my best friend and I used to secretly run off to Boots after school on a Friday to buy lipgloss, getting home before anyone became suspicious of our whereabouts. Though our friendship didn’t stand the test of time, apparently glitter is forever. Now I’m 16 and I think it’s safe to say that my make-up collection has grown exponentially since then, and is no longer confined to glitter lip gloss. If I was forced to pick my top ten beauty products it would consist of these:
1 Rimmel Lasting Finish Foundation
As a girl who never leaves the house without a bit of coverage, I go through my fair share of foundation. This full coverage foundation is inexpensive and comes in a range of shades with SPF 20, €8.39.
2 Rimmel Stay Matte Pressed Powder
This product does what it says on the tin and is light on the skin, not cakey, €4.99.
3 Benefit ‘They’re Real!’ Mascara
Benefit is one of my favourite brands because of their cute 50s-style packaging. This mascara doesn’t clump and stays on your lashes as opposed to under your eyes, €26.
4 Eyelure Pro Lash Individual Lashes
I like these lashes because they are subtle and stay on until you wish to take them off (a glue remover is provided for this). When you put them on the end of your lash line, you will instantly feel like Bambi, €7.09.
5 Stila Stay All Day Precision Glide Brow Pencil
Again, this product does what it says on the tin, €19.20.
6 Clarins The Essentials Eye Make-up Palette
This palette consists of practical colours for day and night. Clarins now use recyclable packaging and environmentally friendly materials, €43.
7 Rimmel Lasting Finish Lipstick by Kate Moss
Other than the fact that I’d buy anything with Kate Moss’ name on it, these lipsticks are cheap, collectable and feel soft, €7.99.
8 Urban Decay Naked Illuminated
Perfect for party season, €29.50.
9 ‘Wicked’ Nail Polish by Essie
A cheaper alternative to ‘Vamp’/’Rouge Noir’ by Chanel. It starts red and after a couple of layers becomes darker, €9.99.
10 Marc Jacobs Cucumber
Very fresh and not too sweet, €48.
Sarah Feeney, May Taylor and Maeve Bourke
