What to Buy For Your House This Month

THIS MONTH … we are painting our homes. Looking for some new paint colour ideas? After months stuck inside, a crisp paint job will have your home looking and feeling fresh. But, applying a new lick of paint to your walls is the easy part. Choosing the colour can be baffling. Deciding on what kind of look you want is hard enough, without the seemingly endless options for a single colour. Colours look different depending on the amount of light in a room. Colour cards can be deceptive as they only show tiny amounts of paint, what may appear like a light pink will most likely look at least two times more saturated when on the wall. Test, test, test and get advice from an expert in store.

Swoon-worthy pastels

Some colour combinations can be hard to live with while others can be a bit too daring. One colour combination we can’t get enough of after seeing the film of Jane Austen’s Emma, is Georgian-inspired pink and green. To get the look, consider Dulux Moda’s Renaissance soft green from its Coastal Calm collection alongside Lypsync, a non-sugary pink, from Moda’s True Romance collection. These two shades work beautifully together to create a feminine, calming scheme.

Colour of the moment

Somewhere between a creamy latte and an earthy putty, this Coco 1955 shade reminds us that neutral-coloured spaces can be very rich. Warmer taupe shades have a hint of red, cooler taupes have a hint of green. Getting back to basics is anything but boring. Sunny yellow

Neptune has introduced its newest shade, Saffron. A true yellow, this colour is inspired by both Regency period interiors and 20th-century decorators. Richly pigmented, sunny and warm, Saffron will energise hallways, living rooms and bathrooms. We could all use a dose of optimism these days.

Shades of white

Choosing the right shade of white paint can be overwhelming. From buttery off-whites (great for northfacing rooms) to soft, cool or brilliant whites (the latter have no pigment at all and are suitable for small, bright rooms), there is a huge variety of shades with very different undertones or indeed, none at all. We like Sketchbook by Curator, a stone white inspired by pages of an artist’s drawing pad. It has organic ochre tones which gives it its unique hue. Light will be bounced around a space without the starkness of a traditional sharp white keeping it soft on the eye and easy to live in. www.curator.ie
