With steps to prevent, clean, enhance, treat and protect, beauty editor SARAH HALLIWELL shares the products that will help to TACKLE BREAKOUTS at any age …
We’re seeing a big focus at the moment on products aimed at combination skin and skin that’s prone to acne. Since it’s caused by hormonal imbalances, with oil overproduction causing the blocking of pores, acne is one of those things that can affect us way beyond teenage years, and so it’s useful to know what’s out there to help with skin that’s oily and prone to spots, at every age.
Teenagers getting spots is one thing, but in your 40s/50s you’d think we’d be entirely free of all spottiness. Not so – anything from hormones (again) to diet, pollution and UV rays can affect the balance of your skin and cause blocked pores or spots. Beware too of overrating: just as lack of proper cleansing can cause problems, so can overloading skin with too many products.
1 In the hunt for something naturally effective, a simplified three-step routine to keep skin clear and bright, without being overly complicated, sounds appealing. Caudalie‘s Vinopure range, created especially for this skin type and launching in September, starts from €18 and includes a purifying toner, a Blemish Control Infusion Serum (which can be used as a concentrated treatment directly on spots) and a mattifying daily balancing Fluid to moisturise and balance skin. What appeals: the focus on natural ingredients, from organic rosewater to salicylic acid (which helps to unclog pores), plus essential oils, to balance, moisturise and mattify skin. Try also Caudalie’s staple Instant Foaming Cleanser, a light, soap-free foam with purifying sage and chamomile extract, ideal for combination and oily skin. We love the natural ingredients that make this so safe and gentle. €14.70, at pharmacies and www.caudalie.com.
2 Clearogen is a trusted staple for tricky skin. Their preventative 3-step treatment includes a foaming cleanser with salicylic acid, a toner to clarify, and a lotion with sulfur, all designed to block DHT, or Dihydrotestosterone, a hormonal byproduct of testosterone that naturally occurs in both men and women. Fluctuating levels of this can be a cause of acne. The set for a two-month treatment is €75, or each product is available individually. It’s recommended by dermatologists: Dr Naomi Mackle recommends it for “mild to moderate symptoms”. www.clearogen.ie.
3 Irish skincare brand Elave has a good Rejuvenating Cleansing Treatment with 12 per cent glycolic arginine complex, making it gently exfoliating and rejuvenating while being safe and kind to use. It’s ideal for adult acne-prone skin. €26.95, at pharmacies and www.elaveskincare.com.
5 bareMinerals has launched new Blemish Rescue make-up, a loose powder that’s formulated for treating acne as well as concealing any bits you want to cover up. It has many fine qualities: it’s clean, made with oat protein and it’s designed to be non-drying; it’s skin-clearing, with breathable mineral pigments and a naturally matte finish; and it’s fragrance-paraben- and talc-free. €30, in 20 shades. There’s also a buffing brush to use with it that’s infused with activated charcoal – this helps to repel bacteria and keep the brush cleaner, vital for keeping acne at bay. At Brown Thomas.
6 At five-star spa Monart, try out a new Pevonia treatment, Youth Renew Hydra Glow Peel, for gently exfoliating skin to achieve a brighter complexion. It stimulates collagen, so is good for older skin that’s prone to oiliness and dullness, and uses lactic acid to improve skin texture. €95, 60 minutes. Monart, Enniscorthy, Co Wexford; www.monart.ie.
7 Aquabella is a new range from Nuxe priced reasonably from €14.50. It features purifying plant extracts and a “natural blur complex” to mattify skin, while hydrating it with natural hyaluronic acid. At pharmacies nationwide.
8 You still need to wear SPF, and that can be problematic for spot-prone skin; it can clog and block, meaning that many of us avoid wearing it. Bioderma Photoderm MAX Aquafluide SPF50+ gives high protection to oily/combination skin with a mattifying finish. It’s fragrance and paraben-free, and you can try out the mini 30ml for around €9. Also look to Bioderma’s Sebium skincare range for acne-prone or oily skin. At pharmacies nationwide.
