Inspired by the solar system, ASTLEY CLARKE‘s latest collection sees the PLANETS carved from GEMSTONES …
Designer Dominic Jones originally won fans for his British punk aesthetic; as a jeweller he fit neatly in with others like Stephen Webster, who took a raw gothic approach to their designs, in keeping with a mood and tone set by the likes of Alexander McQueen on the runway. After some time away, he is back in an exciting new role – as creative director of Astley Clarke, the jewellery brand that begun life online but has branched out to retailers including, in recent seasons, Brown Thomas.
His first big fine jewellery collection for them focuses on astronomy, with the planets carved from gemstones. Some of the pieces feel a little too literal; our favourite planet represented has to be Mars, depicted in a more abstract way with a clean slice of ruby bezel set and dotted with an emerald – although Neptune, taking shape as a glorious slab of lapis, is the ideal summer gem, perfect with whites and tan.
Lovely touches include little diamonds set into the bands of rings, or hovering along the chains of the pendants – these are pieces that run the gamut from simple and delicate to dramatic and powerful; their new cover girl Adwoah Aboah even wore her oversize Saturn ring to the Met Gala.
