Beauty editor SARAH HALLIWELL shares the NEW LIPGLOSSES she’s wearing this summer …
Remember DuWop’s Lip Venom? I remember first trying this lip gloss with a difference – it makes your lips tingle like mad, as it contains essential oils like ginger and cinnamon which boost blood circulation to your lips. It felt like the sophisticated equivalent of eating a packet of fizzy Space Dust, which crackles in your mouth. Well, we’re seeing a return to this idea: lip products that plump and boost your lips as well as adding colour.
Charlotte Tilbury is launching Collagen Lip Bath (available from May 31), with a heart-shaped applicator (actually pretty practical in terms of applying gloss) and a glossy, rosy finish that’s really pretty and comfortable to wear (Tilbury describes it as giving lips a “veil of health”). Also Lancome’s Prismatic Plump Lip Gloss collection takes this concept further, with eight shades that can be used by themselves or as a topcoat to add a 3D effect – they have a light-catching holographic and iridescent effect as well as being fizzy and lip-plumping; at Brown Thomas from May 30.
Meanwhile, Buxom are launching PowerPlump lip Balm on July 5 (€18, at Debenhams), also with a tingle. I really like the subtle finish and softly flattering shades of these balms, and the way you can whip them on at the traffic lights.
Your lips do get thinner as you get older, and some people are self-conscious about this, so these kind of glossy plumpers can be a good option – and, for me anyway, far preferable to turning to the needle, which can result in a frozen pout that’s out of kilter with the rest of your face. You don’t have to aspire to the ubiquitous Insta-pout look to like these: for me, they are just fun and summery, and the way they catch the light makes them fun to play around with as well as feeling lovely and moisturising to wear.
