The NAMES TO KNOW if you’re visiting Dublin’s LARGEST CRAFT FAIR at the RDS this week …
Craft is a funny word. Although at its heart it refers to skilled (often design-led) work, it somehow has a connotation that is not so… chic. Maybe in a bid to shake this off, what was formerly the National Craft Fair has been renamed ‘Gifted: The Contemporary Craft & Design Fair’. And may we emphasise the word ‘design’ – because every year there are brilliant and beautiful pieces on show, with a wide enough variety to please everyone on Santa’s list. Best of all, many of the producers are Irish and small in operation – so it’s a wonderful chance to support local business, while choosing unique – and chic – gifts for your nearest and dearest.
It opens today, and this year, with over 40,000 people expected to the RDS during the six days of the show, it promises to be bigger and busier than ever – but that also means it can be a bit overwhelming. Here, our picks to make a beeline for first:
Danu Ceramics (above) is always a highlight; we use their tiny dishes edged in 22ct gold for everything from holding our jewellery to serving salty snacks at dinner parties. Find their full range at stand 12.
Clement & Pekoe are a must-visit to pick up treats for the tea and coffee lovers on the list – they have one of the best selections of loose leaves in Dublin, and this is a great chance to find your favourite after chatting to their knowledgeable staff. Find them at double stand S100 & S101 in the Christmas Food Emporium.
White & Green are an ethical, fairtrade and 100% organic bedding company, selling the most gorgeous sheets and blankets. New to the market, they were established just last year – we were lucky enough to discover them during a pop-up close to our office, so are thrilled they will now be on show at the fair. Find them at stand 80.
Natasha Sherling usually only meets clients by appointment for her bespoke fine jewellery service. Although her ready-to-wear collection is available online, this will be a great opportunity to see the full range in person, at stand 45. We love the idea of layering her fine gold bracelets, but also have our on eye on some of her special one of a kind pieces – we can’t wait to see these rock crystal and diamond chandelier earrings up close.
For a full list of exhibitors, see the catalogue here, or venture along to the RDS between December 5-10; the show opens until 10pm on weekdays and 7pm weekends.
