Meet Beauty Entrepreneur Dr Colette Haydon of Lixirskin

French dermo-pharmacist DR COLETTE HAYDON has worked behind the scenes as a formulator for many beauty brands, including REN and HealGel. She recently launched her own range, LIXIRSKIN …

Lixirskin in just a few words …

Lixirskin is an advanced approach to good skin. It’s a mix of universal essentials for everyday skin needs, as well as targeted night care for specific skin concerns.

Biggest challenge in launching a new beauty brand …

If you have too much money it’s difficult to prioritise what is truly critical for your brand, and if you don’t have enough money you can’t afford what is critical to its success.

New technology that excites me the most …

The new trend for products like Lixirskin, that have eliminated the nasties but contain pure molecules with proven clinical results. The natural versus synthetic battle is dated – not all chemistry is bad. There are simply good ingredients – safe, effective and formulated correctly, and there are bad ingredients – harmful or ineffective. There is a misconception that natural products should contain many botanical extracts, which actually often have little effect.

My beauty little black book …

Monart in Co Wexford – the facials there are incredible. For beauty shopping, I love Liberty London – the space is eclectic and they have a very special approach to customer service. And French pharmacies: I know I am a pharmacist and French but they are the most unique places in the world.

My working day make-up …

I never put anything on my skin apart from Universal Emulsion. Its emulsification system seals the skin, creating an instantly smoother, plumper and velvety complexion. I don’t believe in using dedicated products for the eyes, face or neck. It’s simply a myth that a product that is good for one part of your skin is not good for another. A good formula does it all. Then, mascara and lipstick.

The single best bit of beauty advice …

The best beauty advice I always give is: go to bed at night and decide that you will wake up beautiful. This is what I did a long time ago. Thinking you are beautiful is being beautiful.

Always in my bag …

Red lipstick; I have many but some are too matte, some are too glossy, some are not quite the right shade. While I don’t layer products on my skin, I have a tendency to layer lipstick to get the right shade.

One thing we all do wrong, beauty-wise …

Products with lots of active ingredients do not work better, in fact they confuse the skin. It tries to work too hard, gets tired and gives up. It is better to ask the skin to do one thing at a time, but to do it well. Less is often more.

Most proud of so far …

“Learn the rules as a pro so you can break them as an artist,” said Picasso. I am a scientist, I adore all sciences, but I dared to experiment with my formulations like an artist.

Injectables, fillers, intervention … yes or no?

Not for me, I never try to look younger. There is beauty at all ages, but it is a free world; I am a live and let live sort of girl.

What’s next …

I predict a more approachable language around skincare.
