Beauty editor SARAH HALLIWELL shares her LITTLE BLACK BOOK of therapists …
I love a good word-of-mouth recommendations when it comes to beauty treatments. Sometimes, the best facialists and massage therapists reside in five-star spas (such as the wonderful Laura Clarke at the Cliff at Lyons) and fancy salons: Angelie at Edvard & Pink in Dundrum and Megan at The Greenhouse Project in Dun Laoghaire spring to mind. But not always. Recently, we’ve had brilliant treatments with therapists in more modest surroundings: there might not be a deluxe swimming pool, heated couches and designer bathrobes on hand, but the expertise and experience is second to none.
Karen Ferranezi at Skinfull Affairs in Dublin’s Exchequer Street is a brilliant therapist – book a Yon-Ka treatment (from €55); the Aroma-Fusion Relaxing Treatment with hot stones (€150, 90 minutes) is an indulgence, but the most transporting treatment ever. We also highly recommend holistic skincare therapist Karen O’Reilly, who offers Dr Hauschka facial and body treatments (including an intriguing facial workout class to stimulate your facial muscles), reflexology and holistic massage in her treatment room at Rathgar’s Orwell Healthcare centre, where she treats residents, as well as external clients. “I am so passionate about how touch improves everyone’s quality of life and the benefits of the natural side of skincare,” says O’Reilly. She is especially wonderful with feet – book the hour-long treatment (€65) and you’ll feel entirely rebalanced. These aren’t pummelling sessions but caring, tender treatments that are restorative and mindful, leaving you rested and unknotted, and with glowing skin.
Karen O’Reilly’s three skin tips for summer:
1 Using the Dr Hauschka Clarifying Toner or Facial Toner after cleansing balances the skins natural processes and is the perfect primer before applying your serum, moisturiser and SPF. I know it can seem like a bit of a dated part of our skincare routine but the Dr Hauschka formulation freshens and revitalises rather than tightening and drying. The facial toner is great to set your make up and brightens your skin throughout the day too.
2 Applying a broad spectrum UVB/UVA protector every single day, come rain or shine, winter or summer is the best thing you can do for your skin in the long term. Wearing a hat and sunglasses on hotter days is also an added layer of protection.
3 In terms of your feet, it’s super important to give our feet as much love and attention as our faces. They are easy to forget but really are the workhorses and heroes of our bodies. A sage footbath is a beautiful way to end a particularly hectic day/week. Using Himalayan salts in the bath is fantastic for detox but also really softens out hardened skin. I use Green Angel Sunrise Body Smoother on my feet and it’s amazing, with all-natural ingredients. You have baby-soft feet after using it.
