How to Wear the Gold Lip Trend …

At this time of year the beauty world goes crazy for ALL THINGS GOLDEN. Winter months always inspire METAL MANIA, from flashy palettes to shimmery eye colours. SARAH HALLIWELL tells us how to wear it …

So far, we’ve seen gold mascaras (Lancôme, Tom Ford) and brilliant bronze highlighters (MAC), liquid liners in the purest molten gold and bronze, and all kinds of gold-leaf and cool bling for nails, most notably Chanel’s upcoming Rouge Noir Gold Sparkle Top Coat (arriving in November).

What’s striking this time round, though, is that gold is set to stick around beyond the party season. If you ever want to get a headstart on new season beauty trends, the first place you look is the Prada catwalk, and for Spring/Summer 2016 Miuccia’s models sported gold lips.

Fun and experimental for the shows, for sure, but gold lipstick is not a trend for the faint-hearted, and probably to be avoided unless you have teeth as white as Olivia Palermo.

In my teens, a local department store stocked lipsticks in every conceivable shade, including orange, silver, gold and black, and I wore them all. I can safely say that gold was by far the least forgiving, giving skin a sickly pallor (and clashing madly with ’80s-style big hair, big earrings and de rigeur blue eyeliner).

Every luxury brand is declaring otherwise just now though, with everyone from Burberry and MAC to Tom Ford storming the gold lip look.

For less-dedicated followers of fashion, an accent of metallic is the best way forward – a hint of MAC Lustreglass in Instant Gold over a regular lip colour, for example – while Ford and Lancôme have both conjured up gold mascaras to tip your lashes with. The perfect foil for a rich dark Rouge Noir lip for winter …
