Glossy Gift Guide: Three of the Best Spa Retreats

The Hedonist’s Delight – plan an escape to a SYBARITIC SPA

At this time of year, as January looms ahead, there is one thing we long for above all the others: an escape to a sybaritic spa. Gift someone the perfect antidote to all the mayhem: a day or two somewhere scenic, luxurious and indulgent, for post-Christmas recovery and restoration. Our top choices would be:

1. Castlemartyr Resort in Co Cork (above) recently celebrated ten years in business, and their Mediterranean Candle Massage is a seriously decadent experience. Warm oil from a candle of lavender, olive or citrus is poured over the body for a prolonged massage using deep and soothing movements. Then relax overlooking the expansive grounds. From €95 for 50 minutes. Products used are fancy French brand Germaine de Capuccini and ESPA. www.castlemartyrresort.ie.

2. Ashford Castle The spa at this most grand of hotels is elegant and comprehensive, with wonderful therapists; it recently won yet another accolade, at the World Luxury Spa Awards. The Holistic Spa Heaven voucher is €105 for an hour’s treatment and access to the fabulous facilities including pool and steam room. Cong, Co Mayo; www.ashfordcastle.com.

3 The Well Spa at Cliff at Lyons in Celbridge, Kildare is just 30 minutes from Dublin but feels like a world away. All we want for Christmas? A voucher for the Deep Tissue Rosemary & Cedar Muscle Relax Oil, from €55. You could also take advantage of the introductory rate for overnight stays, from €170 for two people. For a more modest budget, treatments start from €40. www.cliffatlyons.ie.
