Wine editor MARY DOWEY selects an UPLIFTING WHITE WINE as her bottle of the week …
Joan Soler Pura Vida, Costers del Segre 2016
After our endless winter it’s hard to resist a gloriously tangy, uplifting white wine with the name Pura Vida – pure life. Especially when it comes from one of Catalonia’s most gifted winemakers. Joan Soler is a rising star in the fast-evolving world of Spanish wine – a young man who, having put his exacting stamp on various wineries in various regions, now runs his own outfit.
Organic in approach with leanings towards biodynamics, Soler knows how to coax pristine flavours from his grapes. This blend of Chardonnay and Macabeu tastes every bit as pure as its name suggests, with refreshing apple and citrus notes supported by just a whisper of French oak.
Although it’s light on its feet with a svelte body, the flavours are concentrated enough to linger, exactly as they should in any well-made wine.
This likeable Spanish wine is versatile enough to serve either as an aperitif or with food – maybe fish panfried in butter, a chicken salad, a pork stir-fry or just about any lightish dish not involving red meat. It’s the kind of white that will see you comfortably through what we hope may be described as the brighter months.
Whether you buy it or not, reading about this zesty white should put you in the mood for Ireland’s third Spanish Wine Week, April 23-29 – a brilliant opportunity to understand the excitement that Spain has been generating as a wine-producing country over the past few years. Running in restaurants and wine shops across the country, it includes wine lunches and dinners, tastings and special retail offers. More details on .
