Cheek Thrills: The New Ways To Wear Blush

Blush is BACK WITH A BANG for spring, says beauty editor SARAH HALLIWELL, find out how to wear it now …

Chanel SS18

Every beauty launch this year mentions the word “glow”. The focus for spring/summer is glossy, naturally healthy-looking skin, and that doesn’t mean wearing more foundation. The opposite, in fact. Focusing on skincare – double-cleansing, eating good fats, drinking lots of water – is a given. But to brighten up your face and look naturally healthy, instantly, go back to blush. The endless bombardment of hard-edged contouring and white highlights meant blush was relegated. Now, as part of fashion’s ongoing love affair with millennial pink, it comes as a relief to see a natural flush again – as if skin was windswept, or with the kind of glow you only get after exercise. It’s a softer and more universally flattering way of wearing make-up. Take a lead from Valentino, where the 1970s technique of “draping” (sculpting cheekbones with blush, sweeping colour from the temples to the apples of cheeks) was used to create a pink warmth; or from Armani’s International Make-up Artist Linda Cantello, who tapped Lip Maestro #506 onto cheeks. And this is the key to wearing blush now – toning it in with your lip colour. Versatile formulas such as Chanel’s Lip Blush rise to the occasion. If your habit is powder blush, experiment instead with creams and liquids – they can be lighter and lend a dewy texture that suits older or dry skin. Either way, apply with a light hand – it’s a fine line between subtle glow and hot flush. Start light and add more, keeping it high up on your cheekbones.
