Find out what we’re planning this weekend, from BOOK FESTIVALS to SPA BREAKS …
WHAT: The only accessory to be seen with this weekend is a book. Given there are four book festivals running simultaneously, the culturally curious are spoilt for choice. We’re glamping at Borris House Festival of Writing & Ideas, Co Carlow, where over 60 speakers including Margaret Atwood, Donna Tartt and Nick Laird will be participating in some 50 events over three epic days. For last minute bookings visit www.festivalofwritingandideas.com. Do check the programmes for Belfast Book Festival June 6 – 16, Wexford Literary Festival June 8 – 10, Enniscorthy, Co Wexford and Howth Literary Arts Festival June 8 – 10, Howth, Co Dublin.
WHY: Sitting on the Dock of the Bay is one of our favourite summer tunes and is also the setting for Charlotte Quay Restaurant & Bar, at the water’s edge at Grand Canal Dock, Dublin 4. Whether it’s cocktails on the terrace or enjoying the new summer menu, which has a range of tempting light meals perfect for a girls’ lunch, the stylish venue is a little oasis of relaxation. Their weekend brunch also runs from 11am to late on Saturdays, (closed Sunday evening). Do look out for their Summer Supper Series too.

HOW: Birdsong, fresh air and inspiring views of Ardmore Bay, Co Waterford are all part of the enjoyment of booking a spa treatment at The Well by the Sea in Cliff House Hotel. They have cleverly launched an outdoor treatment menu using natural, botanical products from their Well at Cliff range. Top picks for us include the Cliff House Scalp and Hair Ritual, which releases tension from the scalp and neck while nourishing the hair with a conditioning white clay hair treatment and The Well by the Sea Escape – a warm seaweed soak for the feet in tandem with a massage to release tension in the arms, shoulders, neck and scalp. There’s also an outdoor hot tub and peat bath available too.

WHO: Work by 264 students and postgraduates of NCAD Schools of Fine Art, Design, Education and Visual Culture will be on display from Saturday June 9 – 17 at 100 Thomas Street, Dublin 8. Having had a sneak preview of the show, which doesn’t shy away from tackling societal issues, key themes include the human relationship with machines, privacy and personal data concerns, gender constructs and identity, as well as migration, Brexit and sustainable living. www.ncad.ie.
WHERE: We’re booking ahead for a luxury staycation with Lough Erne Resort’s summer packages in the picturesque Fermanagh Lakelands. The “Fermanagh Down Under” package includes a tour of the stunning Marble Arch caves, while the “Cruise Through Summer” package offers a one-hour cruise with the famous Erne Water Taxi. Both packages are available Sunday to Thursday (from £115pps) and include an indulgent breakfast, access to the Infinity Pool at The Thai Spa and to the Collop Walk on the resort grounds. www.lougherneresort.com.
