5 Glossy Things To Do This Weekend

We’re planning a visit to the annual TURNER EXHIBITION at the National Gallery, booking in for a detox-escape at MONART SPA and going to the Lighthouse Cinema as part of the DUBLIN BOWIE FESTIVAL

WHY: While we’re looking forward to The Wedding Salon at The Merrion on March 10, newly-engaged couples may also want to book The Shelbourne Hotel’s latest Wedding Forum on January 5, from 6.30pm to 9.00pm. Beginning with drinks and canapés in the Great Room, attendees will get a glimpse into what goes into planning a flawless event. Tríona McCarthy will offer beauty and style advice as will the hotel’s style butler Marietta Doran, while the team from Louis Copeland will have tips for the groom and groomsmen. Another highlight will be floral displays prepared by the Flowers by The Shelbourne team. An array of bridal gowns from Myrtle Ivory in the Great Room will also be on display. Places are strictly limited to 80, and only by invitation. To request an invitation, email rhi.dubbr.sales@renaissancehotels.com.

HOW: Starting 2018 with some culture we’re going to the annual exhibition of Turner watercolours in the National Gallery of Ireland which features new work by Irish printmaker, Niall Naessens. Good Morning Mister Turner – Niall Naessens and J.M.W. Turner brings together the Gallery’s Vaughan Bequest of 31 watercolours by JMW Turner (1775-1851) and a series of etchings and drawings by Naessens. He approaches Turner’s work, not as images to be imitated, but as a means of looking at the landscape.

There is also a programme of ancillary events to coincide with the Turner exhibition in January. See www.nationalgallery.ie.

WHAT: In need of a detox, we’re booking into the three-day Monart Life programme at the Monart Spa. This is a bespoke programme of fitness and a cleansing and comprises a series of spa treatments (Indian head massages, sauna rituals, massages and dry flotation) as well as healthy meals, meditation and aqua and circuit classes. The 3 Day all-inclusive Monart life Detox Programme including all food, treatments, individual evaluations and a personal trainer is priced from €479.00 per person sharing. www.monart.ie.

WHERE: The Dublin Bowie Festival starts today and runs until January 10. We’re going to The Lighthouse Cinema on Saturday January 6 to watch behind-the-scenes footage of the recent Bowie exhibition in V&A Presents: David Bowie Is. The exhibition curators, Victoria Broackes and Geoffery Marsh, provide insight into the memorable music videos and costumes as well as diary entries and handwritten lyrics. www.dublinbowiefestival.ie.

AND: Did you resolve to learn a new skill, or improve on an existing one this year? Then a five-week Introduction to Make-up Course may appeal. The Derrick Carberry Academy at The Brown Thomas Beauty Lounge will cater for make-up enthusiasts of every ability. It will run every Tuesday evening from 6.30pm – 9pm starting on January 16 at The Brown Thomas Beauty Lounge and costs €600. Purchase directly on www. brownthomas.com or by calling The Beauty Lounge on 01 617 1172.
