5 Glossy Things To Do This Weekend

We’re getting into the Christmas spirit at a CAROL SERVICE, planning a SPA BREAK and picking up some LAST MINUTE GIFTS

WHO: Nothing says Christmas more than a candle-lit carol concert. We’re looking forward to seeing (and hearing) The Dublin Bach Singers and Mozart Festival Orchestra in full period costume. They will be staging an evocative concert by candle light at the National Concert Hall on December 22. Conducted by Michael Bawtree they will perform well-known carols and in addition Handel’s Christmas sequence from Messiah, Cullen’s Joy to the World as well as pieces by Gruber, Rutter and Corelli. Nika Goric will be soprano. www.nch.ie.

WHAT: Nip to the award-winning Vanity Rooms in Stepaside to have a fabulous pair of Let’s Go Lashes applied. The fine mink lashes are applied one by one giving your eyes a wide-open, beautiful Bambi look. It takes 40 mins and costs €48. Choose a natural or glamorous look. The natural one was more than oomphy enough for us: pretty for parties but not weirdly fake by day either. They last two weeks and are easily removed in the salon in just ten minutes. A gift voucher for lashes would be a very nice last-minute gift for a girlfriend. The lovely team at the Vanity Rooms will oblige. Book online at www.vanityrooms.ie or call 01 295 9183.

WHERE: We’ve booked Upstairs at Wood & Bell (Killaloe, Co Clare), which has just been opened by former rugby legend Keith Wood, along with his business partner Malcolm Bell, who both share a passion for fine food. Says Wood, “Upstairs at Wood & Bell stems from a conversation over dinner in Chicago with Malcolm, on the eve of the magnificent Ireland win over the All Blacks. Twelve months later we are ready to make that dream into a reality.” The menu features classic, French-influenced dishes with produce provided by the restaurant’s own gardens  overlooking Lough Derg and managed by Keith’s wife, avid gardener Nicola Wood.

Upstairs at Wood & Bell is located on Main Street, Killaloe, Co Clare. The opening hours are Wednesday to Saturday, 5.30-9.45pm. Telephone 061 517 480, info@woodandbell.com.

WHY: We don’t need a reason to visit a spa – especially at this time of year. However having been named as Luxury Spa of the Year in the inaugural Irish Beauty Industry Awards, K Spa at The K Club is on our to-do list. The Wellness Suite in the spa features a hammam, hydrobath, Vichy shower, and an exotic Rasul chamber. There are lots of treatments to choose from (for both men and women) including balneotherapy, aromatherapy, thalassotherapy, massages, facials, and essential party prepping packages. To make a booking call The K Club on (01) 6017200; www.kclub.ie.

WHO: Another idea for a last-minute Christmas gift? We recommend the special yoga retreat for beginners and experienced yogis at Ballymaloe House from January 5 – 7, with America-based yoga teacher Ducky Punch. With accommodation options ranging from sharing one of the cottages on the grounds of Ballymaloe House to rooms in the main house itself, the retreat includes daily yoga and therapeutic sessions and delicious meals focused on healthy, hearty, nourishing food that leaves you feeling energised.
