We are planning trips to ART GALLERIES and the theatre, and booking in for some pampering at THE SALON AT THE SHELBOURNE …
WHAT: We’re passing by The Doorway Gallery to checkout their Christmas Stocking Fillers exhibition – a unique show where all the canvases are the same size by different artists including our favourites Heidi Wickham and Lucy Doyle. The good news is all the paintings are under €500 giving an opportunity to acquire a piece for someone special.
2 Frederick Street South, Dublin 2; www.thedoorwaygallery.com.
We’re also passing by The Oriel Gallery to get Norman Teeling’s newly-published book Around the World in Eighty Paintings. For budding landscape artists Teeling provides easy-to-follow instructions demonstrating proper oil painting techniques. He also advises on how to approach a painting and the keys to painting in the open air.
17 Clare Street, Dublin 2; www.theoriel.com.
WHERE: As an antidote to festive fever we’re booking tickets for one of Smock Alley’s productions over the next few weeks. The Grimm Tale of Cinderella is currently on until December 23, while there is also time to catch an Enda Walsh double-bill Disco Pigs and Sucking Dublin which finishes on Sunday 16. Both productions can be enjoyed with a pre-theatre brunch or dinner. Tickets from €18; www.smockalley.com.
WHY: We’ve heard carbs are back in vogue (hashtag Carbdiem) and so we’re eager to try out Mulligan & Haines’ new menu. Once home to the Dublin Bread Company, the restaurant is staying true to its roots with doughy delights for lunch (Rustic Sourdough with Russian sauce and Swiss cheese sounds tempting) and more traditional offerings for dinner. Sweets include bread and butter pudding and a hazelnut marble bunt cake. Offering value in a stylish setting, Mulligan & Haines also boasts a tempting cocktail menu.
32 Dame Street, Dublin 2. email@example.com or telephone 085 235 7664.
HOW: It’s peak office party time, so where better to perfect your party look than at The Salon at The Shelbourne. Their Winter Glow package includes a luxe blow dry, glam make-up application with a finishing touch of buff and polish for nails. This is available until the end of the month for €115 per person, call 01 6634500; www.shelbournespa.ie.
AND: Gin connoisseurs take note. If you’ve never tried Galway gin, the main botanical of which is dilisk seaweed harvested in Galway Bay, then an original way to taste it is over Afternoon Tea at the g Hotel. They’re offering a timely Gingle Bells Afternoon Tea. Available from midday to 6pm, at €59 for two guests in the comfort of the Signature Lounges, expect delicious sandwiches, freshly baked scones with clotted cream and preserve and a beautiful selection of seasonally themed sweet treats to relish and enjoy.
