5 Glossy Things To Do This Weekend

We’re planning Christmas gifts at BROWN THOMAS, eating out at an ITALIAN FOOD MARKET by Peroni and booking a stay at ASHFORD ESTATE

WHY: To Brown Thomas to see The Marvel Room, which opens on Thursday October 19.  We’re particularly looking forward to seeing how street-artist Daniel Cordas will customise some Jimmy Choo trainers in his inimitable style. The London-based graffiti artist will be in store on Friday 20 (from 12pm – 8pm), and Saturday 21 (from 11am – 7pm)  to personalise the classic Miami trainer for customers. Prices start at €230 for the personalisation service. www.brownthomas.com.

WHERE: We’re looking forward to a special one-night-only dinner on Friday, October 20, at The Green Barn in Burtown House (just outside Athy in Co Kildare), featuring the award-winning author, chef and cookery teacher, Gill Meller of River Cottage. Meller is an advocate of simple, seasonal cookery (as shown in his cookbook Gather) and he has devised a special five-course menu using ingredients from Burtown House’s garden, selected with kitchen gardener Dermot Carey.

The menu will be paired with wines selected by Shane Banim, of Banim Wine Merchants, who will introduce each wine on the night. What promises to be a lovely evening begins at 7pm and costs €95 per person. To book, email info@burtownhouse.ie or call The Green Barn on +353 (59) 8623865.

WHAT: We endorse @TheDrawingRoom’s initiative to use Georgian town houses as the setting for audiences to enjoy music or art, and at the same time appreciate the beautiful interiors and interesting stories attached to the venues. On Sunday October 22, at 4.30pm, we’re heading to 25 Mountjoy Square, Dublin, to listen to the acclaimed trio – Roman Simovic, Milena Simovic and Tim Hugh. They will be performing a programme that includes Mozart Divertimento in E flat. Tickets are on sale at €15 from www.thedrawingroom.ie.

HOW: Looking for a change of scenery and a cosy escape, then the new Robe, Rosé & Relax package at The Lodge at Ashford Castle may appeal. Overlooking Lough Corrib, the deluxe stay in one of the charming Quay Suites is an indulgent treat (from €320 per person sharing). It includes a two-night stay in a Quay Suite with breakfast each morning, a complimentary bottle of rosé on arrival with complimentary room-service from the new Quay Bar bites menu. Also included is a bespoke Dermalogica facial for both guests at the Beauty Rooms at The Lodge and bath salts from The Handmade Soap Company. Fluffy robes at the ready! www.thelodgeac.com.

WHO: Acclaimed Italian chef Francesco Mazzei and former Young Chef of the Year Mark Moriarty have devised a special menu for The House of Peroni: La Sagra, a food festival taking place in Meeting House Square this Thursday 19 (5pm-10pm) and Friday 20 (12pm-10pm). A sagra is a traditional Italian food festival hosted annually across towns and villages in Italy to celebrate their local and regional produce and this special Peroni event will celebrate the Irish food producers creating Italian food here in Ireland, including Toons Bridge Dairy and The Wooded Pig. Entry is free of charge. www.thehouseofperoni.com.

AND: If you’re in Galway why not try A Taste of Spain at RAW at Radisson Blu Hotel & Spa, which starts at 7pm on Friday 20. Tickets for the evening are €50 per person, and includes a 5-course tasting dinner with a selection of Albariño wines from Rías Baixas.

Or, if you are staying in Dublin, the final RHA’s Hennessy Lost Friday session returns on Friday. See the stunning surrounds of the gallery come alive with a mix of dynamic artists, musicians and creatives from 7.45pm . For more information and tickets visit the Eventbrite page.
