We’re planning a backstage visit to the ABBEY THEATRE, enjoying THE SHELBOURNE HOTEL‘s oyster festival and unwinding at The Heritage Killenard …
WHEN: The Shelbourne Hotel’s Oyster festival starts on Friday September 1 and runs for a week. Day one sees live music in the lobby of the hotel from 1 – 2pm, then again from 6 – 9pm, getting the festival started in style. A six-course oyster tasting menu by Chef Garry Hughes and his team is available in The Saddle Room at The Shelbourne every evening throughout the festival for €69 per person, or with wine pairings for €95, selected by sommelier Nisea Doddy. In addition to the tasting menus, The Shelbourne serves a selection of oysters simply iced and on the half shell served over crushed ice with the traditional accompaniments of shallot vinaigrette and Tabasco. To book, call 01 6634500. www.shelbournedining.ie.
WHERE: We’ve heard that the Exploring Costume experience with Airbnb is well-worth trying and have signed up for a tour. Hosted by Niamh Lunny, who has been Head of Costume of the Abbey Theatre for the last decade, she offers a behind-the-scenes perspective on her role which involves supporting designers, directors and actors. This experience is divided into two parts. Running for two hours in the morning from 8.30-10.30am, you will get to experience the set-up for the day ahead and get a behind-the-scenes perspective on the workings of the costume department. The second half of the experience begins at 7.30pm, when guests attend a show and see the costumes brought to life by the actors. www.airbnb.ie.
WHO: Fans of influencer Pippa O’Connor will want to book the styling event she is hosting at Arnotts Shoe Gallery First Level, on Saturday September 2 at 12pm. Pippa will be showcasing her must-have shoes for the new season, and pairing them using AW17 womenswear collections including SET, Samsoe & Samsoe, Max & Co and Suncoo. Brands from the Shoe Gallery will include some of the newest additions by Jonak and Michael Kors. The event is free of charge though customers need to sign up at www.arnotts.ie to register their interest.
WHY: It’s that time of the year when our wardrobes transition from summer to more autumnal dressing and it’s time for a bit of a clear-out. Why not support TK Maxx Give Up Clothes For Good campaign in aid of Enable Ireland? The campaign has just been launched by some well-known faces including Laura Whitmore and Daphne Selfe, photographed by Jason Bell. To take part, simply donate unwanted clothes, accessories and homeware items to any TK Maxx store and nominate a friend or colleague to do the same. Each bag is worth up to €20 to Enable Ireland. www.tkmaxx.ie.
WHAT: It’s impossible not to mention Electric Picnic – the music and arts event runs all weekend from September 1 – 3 at Stradbally, though roughing it at festivals is not really our scene. That’s why the Post-Picnic Pick-Up at The Heritage Killenard sounds more appealing. The luxury hotel in Laois is offering this special package – available to book on Monday September 4. The package includes an overnight stay for two with dinner in the Arlington restaurant, a two-hour Spa Experience in their Thermal Suite and a 30 minute ESPA spa treatment. €150 per person sharing. www.theheritage.com.
AND … Luttrellstown Castle Resort, set on 500 acres, is a place of secluded tranquillity and grandeur 20 minutes from Dublin city centre. Steeped in history, the castle’s original character has remained untouched – a testament to previous owner Aileen Plunkett, who inherited the estate from her father Ernest Guinness in the 1920s. During her 50 years in residence she created an elegant setting, perfect for entertaining. Opening to the public for the first time, the Aileen Plunkett Afternoon Tea starts in October and is served every Sunday in the Van Stry ballroom at two sittings (2pm and 4.15pm). We’re booking ahead to ensure a place. From €45 per person, contact 01 860 9620 or email@example.com. www.luttrellstowncastle.com.
