5 Glossy Things To Do This Weekend

We’re planning a special dinner at WILDE, an afternoon of OPERA and an overnight stay at the ICE HOUSE HOTEL

WHEN: We’ve missed the first two concerts of Opera in the Open at the Amphitheatre, Wood Quay, Dublin 8, but are determined to make it either today or next Thursday. One of the most popular summertime events in the city, it’s now in its 18th year. Each concert stages one-act operas from 1–2pm. Free to enjoy and with the weather so lovely, we’re looking forward to Eoin Cannon and David Wray’s production of Rita (Donizetti) today, and Gianni Schicchi (Puccini) next Thursday August 24.

WHAT: To Kilkenny this afternoon and the Newpark Hotel where Vogue in the Afternoon is taking place. Hosted by fashion stylist Laura Mullett, the event comprises a fashion show and afternoon tea (with some bubbles) in The Terrace, overlooking the grounds. The Newpark is also hosting an exhibition of Gill O’Shea’s portraits of Hollywood style icons (until August 31), and Gill will be giving a talk at the event. Tickets cost €35 with all proceeds going to Breast Cancer Ireland. The special ‘Vogue in the Afternoon Tea’ menu is available from 12.30-3.00pm daily for the duration of the exhibition. www.flynnhotels.com.

If you’re in Kilkenny at the weekend, do visit Hi Fashion! an exhibition at the National Design & Craft Gallery which celebrates the connections and contrasts in Irish and Japanese design. It opens at 4pm on Saturday August 12, and features accessories and designs from Issey Miyake, Aideen Gaynor, John Rocha and Maiko Takeda, amongst others. Well worth a visit. www.ndcg.ie.

WHERE: With only a couple of weeks before the inevitable “back to school” mindset kicks in, The Ice House in Ballina, Co Mayo has a tempting Last Days of Summer package to enjoy. It includes two nights bed and breakfast, one dinner, a complimentary cocktail, bike hire and a packed picnic. There’s also a Voya seaweed bath and unlimited time in the Chill Spa thermal suite. Stunning views of the river Moy are an added bonus as well as gorgeous Foxford blankets for enjoying a late evening cocktail on your terrace, with the sunsetting over Belleek woods. Bliss! Last Days of Summer is from €314 per person sharing. www.icehousehotel.ie.

HOW: We were fortunate to attend the launch of Wilde’s very special new dining experience and can highly recommend it. Running until September 30, it consists of a thoughtful menu created by Wilde’s executive chef Sandeep Singh, paired with Krug Champagne selected by renowned sommelier Julie Dupouy. Diners can enjoy Krug Grande Cuvée 163rd edition, 164th edition and Krug Rosé. It’s a unique collaboration and a first in Ireland and will be appreciated most by those who want to extend their knowledge of food pairings and sample such fine vintages. Diners can choose to indulge in the full, three-course pairing menu, or simply select a starter or a main course pairing if preferred. For a special occasion, this collaboration and the elegant backdrop of the restaurant sets the scene perfectly. www.wilde.ie, phone 01 6163352 for bookings.

WHERE: Killruddery House & Gardens in Bray, Co Wicklow is hosting the fifth Groove festival next weekend, on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20. Time to don your best festival gear for the event which features Primal Scream, UB40, Hothouse Flowers, Hudson Taylor and many more on the main stage. We’re booking our day tickets (€59.50 each), which also allows access to Thrive – the festival’s new health, fitness and wellness quarter, which has a programme of over 35 classes, wellness workshops and inspirational talks. Experts include Andrea Hayes, Chris Flack, Emma Buckley and Roz Purcell, while dance, Pilates and yoga classes are on the menu. We may need to sort out two outfits for the day! bookings@groovefestival.ie. www.groovefestival.ie.

AND: We’re popping into Brown Thomas to visit the gift and interiors pop-up, where we’ve heard Field Apothecary – one of our favourite brands – has a new scented candle. Birch has been created by Alix Mulholland and features top notes of cassis, birch and lavender. Costing 35 euros, it’s a steal! www.fieldapothecary.ie.
