Make the new season’s BEAUTY LOOKS work for you, SARAH HALLIWELL talks through the trends to try now …
The new mood in beauty is both fresh and fierce. It’s a celebration of everything that Instagram looks are not: uncontrived yet polished, natural yet groomed. Accentuate your best features and experiment with flashes of brilliant colour – whipped-on red for lips, petrol blues for eyes – and a generous hand with the kohl, to look dressed up and pulled together …
1. Red lips bare face
Whether super-strong matte or glossy cherry, the red lip is back with a bang for AW17. The trick is imperfection: a slightly messy, matte red, at seen at Rosie Assoulin – this we can do. Go entirely matte, inspired by Prada (above) – modern formulas deliver full-impact colour without the chalkiness. Load it on and don’t look back.
TRY Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet in First Light (€35). Forget your standard nude and go bold, strong and emphatic.
2. Let it glow
Ace winter skin with ten minutes’ blustery walk along the beach: you want fresh and glowing windswept skin with a rosy glow – see Erdem and Hermès for inspiration. Have freckles? Lucky you; everyone else is drawing them on. TRY Victoria Beckham’s Morning Aura cream helps to fake good skin, either as a primer or tapped on cheekbones; wear with just a bit of concealer or stick foundation.
3. Wear loads of liner
Two instant autumn updates: pare back your foundation, load on the liner. Be inspired by catwalk looks from sulky rock chick (Marni) to full Black Swan (Balmain) and go for tons of charcoal-black against fresh, glowy skin. Sharpen your kohl and try winged-out like Chanel and Chloé, or a thin black line as at Alexander Wang. MAC’s ingenious Rollerwheel Liquid Liner – like a road line marker for eyes – is one of the best we’ve tried. TRY Catrice 18h Colour & Contour Eye Pencil, €2.50 at Penneys; MAC Rollerwheel Liquid Liner, €22.
4. Brow beaters
Keep brows big and natural, with a little help …
TRY Chanel’s double-ended Defining Longwear Eyebrow Pencil, €37; M2 Beauté Eyebrow Renewing Serum gives a boost for thinned or patchy brows – it takes time, but it does work. €130, at Brown Sugar; www.m2beaute.ie.
5. Brave the bob
New season, new cut? The catwalks saw the return of brutally short fringes that look rough and ready, as if the model cut them herself. Other options are easier to carry off. Always neat and a bit French chic, a fresh bob lops off several years along with your split ends. For evening, high-maintenance expensive-looking waves and glossy 1940s-style rolls, as seen at Bottega, exemplify the season’s dress-up vibe.
