A whiff of the contraband is hovering around beauty counters. Move over superfoods: it looks like cannabis-infused topicals could be the next attention-grabber in beauty. The cannabis plant contains compounds called cannabinoids, which our body produces naturally; they help in regulating functions such as skin sensitivity, appetite and even memory. Hemp oil, derived from the plant, is rich in nutrients, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant qualities – and no, it won’t get you high. Find it at Eats of Eden in Limerick, or look at US range Apothecanna (www.apothecanna.com). Try Dr Organic Hemp Oil Rescue Cream, at Holland & Barrett. It’s hitting the scent world, too. Eau de Memo by Memo Paris has a hint of hash about it, while Italian brand Nasomatto (“crazy nose”), at perfume boutique Parfumarija in Dublin, has a notorious fragrance called Black Afgano (€118) in their library: “It’s a groundbreaking scent evoking the best quality of hashish,” notes Parfumarija’s Marija Aslimoska. It’s an extrait de parfum, so very concentrated, and particularly hypnotic. Richard E Grant included a hint of marijuana in his original Jack fragrance. “The marijuana note caught people’s attention,” he tells us. “I grew up in Swaziland where there is a lot of it around, and its peppery, earthy smell is something I think is very sexy and delicious – and there are very few perfumes in the world that use it as a note.” No wonder it’s addictive …
