We’re Getting In The Mood For Rosé

MARY DOWEY selects a ravishing LOIRE ROSÉ to kickstart your summer – and celebrate REAL WINE WEEK …

Domaine du Haut Perron Sonnemot Touraine Rosé 2015/6

If you’re inclined to associate rosé with scorching Mediterranean holidays, think again.

Crisp, dry pink is the perfect summer drink even in much less sweltering conditions. To underline the point, this beauty comes from Touraine, part of the vast Loire wine region in the northern half of France. It looks so pretty and tastes so juicily delicious that it will slip down easily in Ireland over the next few months – with sun or without.

Sonnemot comes from the family estate which Cédric and Dorothée Allion run according to the principles of Terra Vitis, an organisation promoting sustainable, environmentally respectful viticulture. They are also firm believers in minimal intervention in the winery. As a result their wines have strikingly pure flavours – in this case of strawberries and redcurrants with just a hint of orange.

Made from the Gamay grape, this tasty, creamy-textured rosé is a versatile partner for a vast range of summer foods besides making a tempting apéritif. Sushi, crab, prawns, salmon, tomato-based dishes, chicken, ham, not to mention mixed salads of various kinds… all of these will taste more vibrant in its company.

Look out for this and many other wines made along organic or biodynamic lines with very low winery intervention over the next couple of weeks, because May is Real Wine Month. Now in its fourth year, this initiative is spearheaded in Ireland by Le Caveau of Kilkenny, an importer and retailer with an outstanding selection of over 200 artisan wines.

You’ll find special offers on many of them in some 50 restaurants and wine shops across the country. Try them. Wines likes these have ten times more personality than all the bland, mass-produced stuff that’s knocking around, and will give you a lot more pleasure besides helping our poor old planet too.
