If the best gifts come in the smallest boxes, there are three MUST-SEE JEWELLERY AUCTIONS that need to be visited before Christmas. Offering excellent value and a beautiful selection of unusual items, auctions are a WORTHWHILE PITSTOP for those who like their jewellery unique, antique, or one-of-a-kind …
Those in the know lust after older versions of classics like Cartier’s Love bangles or Van Cleef & Arpels Alahambra necklaces – rumour has it that the older versions are better quality than the new. Some watches are exceptionally well priced at auction – Rolex, for example, can be a third of the RRP; helpful for those who are drawn to the heavy weight gold and platinum models which run into five figures and beyond in a regular jeweller. And for those who love old cut diamonds, or classic Victorian jewellery – auctions can’t be missed.
In the next week, three of the biggest in Ireland include:
1. Adam’s, whose auction takes place today – so hurry down to their Stephen’s Green showroom. The auction itself doesn’t start until 6pm, but viewings are taking place during the day, until 4pm, for a chance to see all lots up close and personal. The catalogue is online here for a little taster – we are particularly taken with these French coral and diamond ear clips, as well, of course, as the citrine and diamond drop earrings we featured in our November issue jewellery shoot.
2. O’Reilly’s Auction Rooms host jewellery auctions every month, and can always be relied on for a fantastic selection of diamond rings, including a wide range of solitaires and eternity bands. This month, as well as some truly spectacular sparklers, like the five carat marquise, pictured, they also have a great selection of brooches to charm anyone who likes their flora and fauna diamond studded. The auction will be held next Wednesday, December 14, with viewings in the days before – exact days and times can be found in their online catalogue.
3. John Weldon Auctioneers are based in Temple Bar, and also hold monthly jewellery auctions. Their last one of the year will take place next Tuesday, December 13, featuring a super range of pieces – from delicate chains, to a great array of coloured stones and diamonds. Collectors of Irish silverware will find it worthwhile to pay a visit to the Cow’s Lane viewing as well.
Finally – if feeling very fancy, check out Christie’s and Sotheby’s – both are hosting their Magnificent Jewels sales this week in New York. If in the city, make time to go to the viewings and try on the 30+ carat diamond rings and necklaces – absolute heaven for any jewellery lover. And if not in Manhattan? Dream from your desk – their full catalogues are online here (Christie’s) and here (Sotheby’s).
